From the time we were little, we’ve struggled with what gray hair represents because that’s what we were taught. There are so many myths that we latched onto, including the ones that having gray hair ages you, that you can’t go gray until you’re at least 80 years old, or that having gray hair somehow diminishes your intelligence and ambition. We cry foul! It’s time to reprogram those negative thoughts. With a few small tweaks in both mind and spirit, you’ll be a shining example of what it’s like to go gray grays-fully. 

  1. Debunk Beauty Norms: First things first- You realize that by choosing to go gray, you have kicked societal-defined beauty ideals to the curb, right?! BRAVO! You chose you instead of allowing social media to dictate what’s beautiful. The answer to that has been in front of you all along…
  1. Play Up Your Style: Going gray doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly lost your sense of style. Now is the perfect time to embrace bolder fashion choices. If you wear glasses, try bold-colored frames or an interesting shape that complements your face. Experiment with different makeup. Go for a bold lip with minimal eyes or vice versa. When it comes to jewelry, think BIG: hoops or big dangles for earrings; multiple necklaces or statement pieces that play into your personality. The focus will be on your style and how your gray hair plays into it. 
  1. Posture: The way you carry yourself tells people a lot about you. Stop making yourself smaller to avoid being noticed because you chose to stop coloring your hair. Stand tall, shoulders back, and make eye contact when you speak. Confident body language takes up way more space than your body size. It speaks volumes. 
  1. Smile: Why so glum, chum? Don’t let your gray hair journey influence your mood. Anxiety and stress can take a toll, showing all over your face. Frowning can distract from your appearance and shift the energy in the room within minutes. A simple smile helps our bodies release cortisol and endorphins, so go ahead and smile. It’s good for you!

Take a Break from the Mirror: This one might be difficult, but if you take the time to focus on how you feel on the inside as opposed to how you look on the outside, you’ll soon realize your self-esteem should come from your inner qualities and not your gray hair.
