You’ve made the decision to go gray, and you’re already thinking of all the money you will save by ditching the dye. But here’s a piece of advice: don’t give up your hairdresser just yet! Gray takes time, and as you are growing it out, you may want to consider ways to blend it for a more “natural” look.

We know you’re using Go Gray’s Clarifying Duo with Activated Charcoal to help gently fade and remove resistant hair color. But the addition of frequent haircuts and the latest highlighting service are all the more reason to visit your salon professional during this transitional phase so don’t count those pennies just yet!

You may have heard of balayage and melts, but the newest hair trend has become an increasingly popular option for blending gray growth. Herringbone highlights offer a low-maintenance, natural-looking, and timeless appearance that can be customized for a variety of hair types and styles.

This trend differs from the traditional highlighting technique your hairdresser may have used on you in the past because of the way the highlights are applied. Traditional highlights are applied in vertical or horizontal sections throughout the hair. Depending on the thickness of the sections, traditional highlights can create a blended effect or a more distinct, chunky pattern.

Herringbone highlights are applied in a diagonal, overlapping pattern to create a herringbone effect. This technique creates a natural look by adding more dimension and depth to graying hair and is particularly effective at blending the highlighted pieces of hair with those pieces that have natural color.

The overlapping pattern is an advantage during this grow-out phase. Any areas left out of the highlight will “fall over” to cover the natural hair for a more subtle and blended effect.

Herringbone highlights are an economical solution for anyone growing out their gray hair because of the low maintenance involved. Alternate your salon visits between haircuts every three months and this technique every six months. Before you know it, your gray hair won’t need additional dimension and depth as it has gotten to this point on its own…with a little help from your talented hairdresser.

Don’t forget to use the Go Gray Clarifying Duo (Charcoal Shampoo and Charcoal Conditioner) to further fade hair color through your regular cleansing routine. Designed to help detoxify the scalp and strands of product buildup and impurities without stripping them of their natural moisture, this must-have duo leaves hair hydrated, smelling fresh and looking shiny.
